The rugged coast!

Aloha travelers! If you’re planning a trip to Oahu, make sure to carve out some time to explore the island’s Leeward side. This area is known for its stunning beaches, rugged landscapes, and laid-back vibe. Here are some of the highlights you won’t want to miss.

First, head to the town of Waianae, where you’ll find some of the best beaches on the island. Makaha Beach Park is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, with its crystal-clear water and perfect surfing conditions. You can also take a snorkeling excursion to nearby Yokohama Bay to explore the vibrant coral reefs and spot sea turtles and other marine life.

If you’re looking for a more rugged adventure, head inland to the Waianae Mountain Range. The Kaena Point Trail is a scenic hike that takes you along the coast and offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for native seabirds and monk seals along the way.

For a taste of local culture, head to the small town of Nanakuli, where you’ll find the Hawaiian Railway Society. Take a train ride through the sugar cane fields and learn about the island’s history of rail travel. You can also visit the nearby Pu’u O Hulu, a volcanic cone that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Finally, end your day with a sunset cocktail at one of the many beachside bars in the area. Local favorites include the Beach House at Pokai Bay and the Hawaiian Princess Beach Resort. Relax and soak in the stunning colors of the sunset while sipping on a mai tai or other tropical drink.

Overall, the Leeward side of Oahu offers a unique and authentic Hawaiian experience that shouldn’t be missed. From beautiful beaches to rugged landscapes and local culture, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. So grab your sunscreen and hit the road to explore this beautiful part of the island! Please note that car vandalism is common in some areas. Look for broken glass (gar windows) on the ground and if you see a lot, maybe try visiting a different area. This is the “wild” side of the island with the largest population of “locals” and it doesn’t offer a ton of tourist based attractions so plan a head.
